Egmont club manager on new cuts: – The number should have been lower

The case is updated.

On Thursday this week, the news came that the magazine giant Story House Egmont will once again have to take out the spare knife. This time the employees have been told that 60 man-years are redundant.

The new cuts are causing unrest, according to club manager Harald Grevskott.

– Now the news has just broken. But it naturally creates a lot of unease when you learn that the company is going to cut staff by so many man-years, says Grevskott to Kampanje.

24.5 of the 60 man-years that are now to go are editorial positions, Kampanje is informed.

– What do you think about the message you received today – is it sad with cuts for the second year in a row?

– When you see the company’s figures from last year, we as a club must also understand that the company is taking some drastic measures to get healthy operations again. But of course it is not a pleasant message for our members.

It was at a general meeting in Nydalen in the office building of the weekly newspaper group Story House Egmont that the 240 employees received the difficult message. It happens just a few days after the company presented an operating loss in 2023 of NOK 3.5 million, which Kampanje mentioned earlier this week.

– We union representatives have been well informed during the process, and the management has listened to some of our advice. Having said that, we have expressed that the club believes that the number to be downsized should have been lower, continues Grevskott.

Also last autumn, Story House Egmont had to cut costs and then by NOK 70 million, which resulted in 33 employees disappearing.

Grevskott can also confirm that the final package offer this time “is a good deal better than before”.

– But we have said that we fear we will not be able to reach the goal of real volunteering with the final package matrix the company has landed on.

– Do you think the Egmont publications will drop in quality as a result of the cuts?

– The management says that it is a clear goal that the quality of the products should not deteriorate. Among other things, they believe that we should save a lot of time by collaborating more across the Scandinavian countries. The club has expressed concern about production and quality both during and after this process, Grevskott replies.
