The Bolivian footballer Sergio Alberto Jáuregui (31) was brutally killed on Sunday during a friendly match in Mexico, reports Spanish AS.
Shot six times
Towards the end of the match, Jáuregui ran towards the bench to get water. According to a witness statement, a man approached him and fired six shots.
The man is said to have fled the scene on a motorcycle.
Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, but Jáuregui was pronounced dead at the scene.
So far, Mexican police have no idea what the motive behind the murder was. The perpetrator is also still at large, according to AS.
Gave everything on the field
In a touching post on Facebook, the club mourns the loss of the captain.
– We appreciate how you defended the club and how you gave everything on the pitch every game. For that reason, we will always have you in our hearts. Many thanks to “the eternal captain of Cuautla,” writes Atlético de San Luis Rey.
Sergio Alberto Jáuregui put his professional career on the shelf in 2015, but continued as a semi-professional in, among other places, Mexico.
