It is only three weeks since Kjetil Rekdal (55) was employed as a coach in the Cypriot football club Omonia. But according to the Cypriot press, things are already simmering under his feet.

Rekdal got off to a flying start as coach with a 5-1 win over Doxa, followed by a 3-0 win over Digenis Ypsonas in the cup.

Then the decline began.

The last three matches have ended with 0-0 (AE Zakakiou), 1-2 loss (Pafos) and 1-2 loss (AEK Larnaca) – all in the league. With Rekdal at the helm, the club has fallen from fourth place to sixth place, and the club is a full 12 points behind league leader APOEL (they were six points behind when the Norwegian was hired).

“Tragic!”, writes the Cypriot newspaper Gazzetta Kypros about the distance.

The consensus in Cyprus is that Rekdal is too defensively oriented and that the crew is too passive, after Omonia had the ball for 39 percent of the time in the previous match.

Boss bomb: – In the background

On Thursday, it was also reported that Rekdal’s boss, Swedish Jesper Jansson, has been fired from the club. He was one of the reasons why Rekdal was brought in in the first place.

Gazzetta Kypros claims that Rekdal is no longer safe.

“The situation has worsened since he arrived at ‘Ilias Pullos’. Instead of an expected improvement, there has been a development that cannot be overlooked by the administrative board, which is governed by the president,” it said.

Kjetil Rekdal has not answered Dagbladet’s inquiries.

Avisa writes that the 55-year-old had a meeting with club president Stavros Papastavrou on Thursday. The club confirms the meeting and at the same time that Rekdal is protected until further notice.

– There was a meeting with the coach, where the development of football was discussed. Mr. Rekdal expressed belief that he can help the team get back on the right path, and will be on the bench during the match against Apollo, says the club’s press manager Andreas Demitrou to In the Stand, reproduced by

When asked if there will be more departures in general at the club in the wake of Jansson’s exit, Demitrou answers the following to Sport FM:

– As I said, there will be immediate changes, it may not be visible to the outside world, but there will be significant changes.

Gazzetta claims there were concerns already for the loss against AEK Larnaca last time. The next match is away to Apollon next Sunday, a team that is in the place below Omonia. It quickly becomes a battle that the team and Rekdal must win.

Rekdal signed a contract with a duration of one and a half years, which also contains an option for a further year.
