On Thursday, Viktor Hovland made a tournament comeback in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He went -3 in the opening round after two birdies on the last two holes.

Nevertheless, the golf star was not completely satisfied. Along the way he had to endure two bogeys.

– There was a lot of debris. First of all, I feel that the close game was not great. I hesitated a bit on a couple of the chips, and put myself in a couple of bad situations as well. It’s the “ball striking” that wasn’t good enough, and the swing isn’t quite right, says Hovland to Discovery.

Discovery’s golf expert Marius Thorp noticed the same thing.

– On the chips, it’s about him becoming a bit passive. It has nothing to do with technique. For Viktor’s part, it was weak in terms of hitting. He must try to weed out the left-wing misses, because it creates a lot of uncertainty for him, says Thorp.

After the round on Thursday, Hovland did not choose to take it easy for the rest of the day. Rather, he went out on the driving range.

– I have to hit some balls and work on the feeling further. It won’t get better overnight, but the more repetitions I do, the easier it gets.

Must find the good feeling again

On Wednesday evening, the day before the start of the tournament, however, Hovland felt that he got some good answers.

– I see clearly what has changed, so it’s just something I have to deal with and work on. It’s not quite where it should be.

Thorp thinks he must build on that.

– He must try to get back to the good feeling he found on Wednesday night, says the expert and continues:

– It says something about his lowest level, when he can go out and feel that he didn’t do anything well, when he goes out -3 and still hangs in there. That is what he has to build on.

Hovland is tied for 14th place before the second round.

It may rain

On Friday, he will play on the Pebble Beach course, instead of Spyglass Hill, which he played on Thursday.

– I would have liked to have been a couple of strokes better, but Pebble Beach is definitely worth scoring on. It depends a little on the weather we get later in the week, but it is possible to make some birdies there too, says the golfer.

The pitch was affected by a lot of rain on Thursday, and thus the ball stopped almost immediately after it landed.

Such tendencies can also be seen on Friday.

– It rained a little last night and in the morning, but the weather should basically be good when they are out playing, says Thorp.
