Ruud lost the quarter-final 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 5-7. In the third set, Jarry broke to 4-3, but Ruud immediately hit back. Then Jarry kept up with fantastic play and broke once more, and Ruud couldn’t match it.
Jarry played his way to two match points after two and a half hours of play. In the second attempt, it was decided.
Before the match, Ruud had 17 straight victories in clay tournaments in Switzerland. Ruud has won the tournament in Geneva the previous two years. In addition, he has two straight triumphs in Gstaad.
Now the Grand Slam tournament Roland-Garros in Paris awaits Ruud. Last year there was a final loss for Rafael Nadal there.
Ruud struggled at times with Jarry in the first set. The Norwegian saved three break points. He himself broke Jarry to 5-3 before defending the next game to 6-3.
Jarry (54 in the world) beat the in-form Dusan Lajovic (51 in the world) earlier in the tournament in Switzerland and showed that he was no fluke. The main server was ready for the quarter-finals after his opponent Tallon Griekspoor withdrew before the match. Jarry went out in the 1st round in both Rome and Madrid.
In set two, they followed each other, and both held serve until 6-6 and a tiebreak. There, the big server Jarry was clearly the strongest and won a whopping 7-2. The hard-hitting 27-year-old then showed great play and could celebrate one of the biggest victories.
The tournament in Geneva is an ATP 250 tournament. This means that 250 ranking points await the winner. On the ATP tour, tournaments are also played that give 500, 1000 and 2000 (Grand Slam) points.
