CASPER RUUD – JACK SOCK 6-4, 5-7, 10-7:
Casper Ruud gave the European team a good start at the Laver Cup when American Jack Sock was beaten in London on Friday afternoon.
When it was equal after two sets, the match was decided in a decisive super tiebreak, where it is the first man to ten points.
There, Ruud drew the longest straw and won 10-7 after some intense ball exchanges, which got the London audience out of their seats.
Ruud: – Unnerving
It all happened in front of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who is also part of the European team and watched the match from a sofa on the sidelines in the O2 Arena.
– It is nerve-wracking to start in front of this audience and in front of the guys on the bench. I think I did well at the start, then Jack came back and fought well in the second set. In a tiebreak, a couple of points are decisive and today the margins were on my side, said Ruud when he was interviewed after the match.
– We both made some mistakes we probably shouldn’t have made at the end, but that’s how it is when you’re nervous and playing for something extra special. I am very happy to give Team Europe a good start, Ruud continued.
Got Nadal advice
Ruud took the initiative from the start in Friday’s match and already broke Sock in the American’s first service game. However, Sock hit back and broke Ruud’s serve to make it 5-4 when the Snarøya boy had to serve home in the first set.
In the Laver Cup, the teams are led by Bjørn Borg and John McEnroe, respectively, and coaching during the match is permitted. It is also not unusual for the players to give each other advice during the match.
Rafael Nadal is particularly known for his intense presence around his teammates in the Laver Cup, something Casper Ruud also experienced.
– Funny to see Rafael Nadal on the sidelines in the Laver Cup. He is the most troubled and invested teammate anyone could have. Imagine how he will be when his children play any sport, tennis journalist Simon Chambers writes on Twitter.
At 5-4 to Ruud, he got up from the sofa and approached the Norwegian on the sideline.
Nadal clearly offered some advice. It is not known whether it was decisive, but Ruud at least broke Socks’ serve and decided the first set 6-4 a few minutes later.
– Fantastic, Casper, Nadal said to Ruud when the first set was over, as he applauded.
In the second set, the players followed each other like shadows until Ruud failed in his last service game. Sock thus had the opportunity to serve home 7-5, and he did.
