(Casper Ruud–Jack Sock 6–4, 5–7, 10–7) Roger Federer (41) stood up and clapped and cheered when Casper Ruud struggled a bit against Jack Sock, Ruud responded by winning the first match for Team Europe.

When Ruud had match point, Roger Federer sat on the bench and clapped and laughed for his teammate. Ruud put it.

– We both made mistakes, but that’s how it is when you’re nervous, says Ruud to the arena speaker on Eurosport.

– There was a bit of back and forth. But it was incredible to play in front of the crowd here and that bench there, says Ruud to the organizer after the match and points to Team Europa.

The tennis world awaits tonight’s match with Federer in doubles alongside Rafael Nadal in the Laver Cup. It is Federer’s last tennis match at the top level. While he is counting down, world number two Casper Ruud is the first man out for Team Europe on the hard court in London.

– There will probably be some tears when Roger goes out to play his last match. One of the greatest athletes, in any sport, of all time. The audience is going to have the experience of a lifetime tonight, says Ruud to the stadium speaker about the evening’s highlight.

On the bench in the first row sat many of the world’s greatest tennis legends cheering on their teammate, and they got to see the 23-year-old from Snarøya start very strongly against the world team’s Jack Sock from the USA. Then it got a little harder, Sock took the second set.

The match was decided by tiebreak. First to ten points, Sock quickly took the lead 3–0. And when there was drama, the European bench rose in excitement. Ruud returned the show to 3–3.

– Come on. Come on, Nadal said to Ruud.

And at 4–3 to Ruud, Stock got frustrated and threw the racket on the ground.

At 5–3 to Ruud, Nadal clapped hard and well.

At 7–6 to Ruud, Federer stood up, clapped, looked at Ruud and said: “Come on”!

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal smiled and clapped when Ruud’s balls sat. The mood was good on the bench for Team Europa when Ruud played for a packed O2 Arena in the English capital.

The Laver Cup is Europe against the world and is being organized for the fifth time.
