New attacks in Gaza: – Fears “the worst massacre of the war”

– Most of Gaza’s population is in Rafah. If the tanks charge in, it will be a massacre unlike anything we have seen during the war.

This is what Emad (55), businessman and father of six, told the Reuters news agency from Rafah.

In the southern border town with Egypt, the fear is now great that Israel will expand the ground operation here.

On Thursday, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that the military would now “eliminate terrorist elements in Rafah”, having now achieved their goal in Khan Younis.

If the Israeli tanks come to Rafah, “then we will have two choices: stay and die, or climb over the walls into Egypt”, says Emad.

“Pressure cooker of desperation”

On Friday, Israeli forces fired shells at the outskirts of Rafah. On the same day, the UN stated that Rafah is now a “pressure cooker of desperation” as a result of many people fleeing the attacks in Khan Younis to Rafah in recent days.

More than half of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million will be in the city, writes Reuters.

– We fear what will happen next, said Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Efforts on Friday.

On Saturday, the Hamas-run health authorities in Gaza said that 18 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes against the southern city of Rafah and Deir al-Balah, which is located in the center of the Gaza Strip.

Born into hell

These are to be the last two cities in the Gaza Strip where Israeli troops have not taken the cities.

They also claim that a residential building was among those attacked in Rafah. 14 people, including women and children, were among those killed, according to the health authorities.

The IDF has not yet commented on the allegations.

Bombed aid organization

At least 107 Palestinians have been killed and 165 wounded in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health in Gaza City says.

At least 27,238 Palestinians have been killed and 66,452 wounded in Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 7, when Hamas attacked southern Israel.

According to Palestinian health authorities, 70 percent of the victims are children and women. Around 8,000 are missing and it is feared that many of them lie under the ruins of bombed buildings.

– Completely unacceptable

On Saturday morning there were reports that Israel has also bombed the offices of a Paris-based aid organization for the disabled in the Gaza Strip.

The building in Gaza City, where Humanity & Inclusion (HI) has its offices, was bombed and completely destroyed on Wednesday, the organization says. The employees were evacuated early in the war, and no one was present on the premises.

– No warning was given to HI, even though the coordinates of the building were reported to Israeli forces via the UN system to prevent attacks against humanitarian targets, as agreed, the organisation, which was formerly called Handicap International, states.

– We are deeply concerned about the pattern in recent months where civilian buildings where organizations have their offices, schools or homes are being destroyed, says Federico Dessi, who heads HI’s operations in the Middle East.

– In violation of international law

Humanity & Inclusion has just over 3,500 employees and runs aid work among disabled people in over 60 countries.

On Friday, Israel’s ambassador to Belgium was summoned to the carpet in Brussels to receive a formal protest at the bombing of the offices of the state-run Belgian aid organization Enabel in Gaza City.

– The destruction of civilian infrastructure is absolutely unacceptable and in violation of international law, Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib stated.
