– There is terrible news coming from our colleagues in Gaza today. We send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and to their friends and colleagues in the Palestine Red Crescent, says Anne Bergh, who is secretary general of the Norwegian Red Cross.

Since 31 January alone, three Red Crescent workers have been killed: Naeem Hasan al-Jabali, Khalid Kulab and Hedaya Hamad.

Director of Communications in the Red Cross Øistein Mjærum confirms the names to VG.

Two of the three were near the gate of the Palestine Red Crescent Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis when they were killed, the third close to the headquarters of the Palestine Red Crescent, which is in the same area as the Al-Amal Hospital.

– We are shocked. The rules in war are very clear, both hospitals and health workers must be protected. We are frustrated and despairing at the situation in which the civilian population and those who try to help them find themselves, says Mjærum.

In a post on X, the Palestinian Red Crescent has posted a video where they say goodbye to Hedaya Hamad:

– There are no safe places left in Gaza. There is nowhere to flee, says Mjærum.

Red Crescent: Was threatened with a weapon

The organization stated on Tuesday that Israeli forces had taken the Al-Amal hospital area with tanks.

Internally displaced Palestinians who had sought refuge at the hospital, along with health teams, were ordered to leave the building, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said on https://twitter.com/PalestineRCS/status/1752355885832110114 Tuesday afternoon.

The organization said they were allegedly threatened with weapons.

– The PRCS teams and displaced persons are in grave danger, they wrote.

The Israeli military has denied the accusations:

– There is no storming of the hospital, it has not been taken over and no one has been threatened with a weapon to leave it, says an Israeli spokesperson to the Reuters news agency.

Norwegian Red Cross workers in Gaza

Over the past few months, the Palestinian Red Crescent has been working to provide health care and other vital emergency aid to people all over Gaza.

The Israeli military (IDF) has carried out a series of attacks on the hospitals in Gaza. They defend the attacks by saying that Hamas will have bases in the hospitals, which Hamas rejects.

– Completely independent of whether there are legal targets or not in a hospital, all parties have a duty to do everything they can to protect health workers and patients, says Mjærum.

Secretary-General Bergh states in the press release that the Red Cross has two Norwegian emergency aid workers in Gaza.

– We are naturally also concerned about their safety, she says.
