MANCHESTER UNITED – CHELSEA 4-1:

There was a lot at stake for Manchester United in Thursday’s league match against Chelsea, and Erik ten Hag’s men really delivered the goods in what turned out to be a raucous football match.

Casemiro sent the home team into the lead when he nodded a free kick into the goal after six minutes. Just before the break, United doubled their lead after a dream goal, where Casemiro once again impressed.

The Brazilian had the ball outside the box, before with the outside of his foot and looking the other way, he played Sancho free on the right of the box. He rolled the ball in to Martial who easily put the ball into the goal.

– It is a perfectly weighted pass. Class from Casemiro, a ridiculous pass, said a slightly shocked Michael Brown on the BBC’s broadcast.

På Andre Helland followed up with the following tribute to Casemiro in the Viaplay studio.

– That is art. It’s just a matter of framing it and hanging it up at the National Museum.

In the second half, Bruno Fernandes made it 3–0 with a penalty. He earned the penalty himself when he was kicked down by Wesley Fofana after a good pass on the Frenchman.

A few minutes later, Marcus Rashford made it 4–0 after another weak involvement by Fofana in the Chelsea defence. João Félix reduced it to 4–1 one minute before full time.

The victory means that Manchester United finish top four in the Premier League, and thus they have also secured Champions League play next season.

Casemiro sent United into the lead

Manchester United had a lot to play for in Thursday’s game, and Erik ten Hag was clear before the game that only victory was good enough. And with sometimes weak defensive play by both teams, it was a lively first half.

Chelsea have struggled to score goals this season, and it quickly became clear that they lack a lot of confidence in front of goal.

After four minutes played, Chelsea had a lot of room to attack, and Mykhajlo Mudryk was eventually served in front of United’s goal. However, the Ukrainian waited with a terrible variation and put the ball far outside.

Two minutes later it slammed at the other end. Christian Eriksen hit a silky free kick into the box. No one picked up Casemiro’s run and he headed the ball easily into the goal. After a VAR check, the goal was approved.

The chances then came on a conveyor belt throughout the match, only stopped by a nasty injury to Antony halfway through the first half. He was carried off the field dissolved in tears. In came Marcus Rashford.

Martial got a payoff

Martial eventually had several big chances, but for a long time it looked like he didn’t have the day in front of goal.

Chelsea were also dangerous going forward, but neither Havertz nor Gallagher’s opportunities went on target.

When the game went to half-time, and Martial seemed to go into the dressing room without a goal, the Frenchman finally got his payoff.

Casemiro chipped the ball beautifully through to Sancho on the right of the box. He picked the ball down, before serving Martial at point blank range. The striker couldn’t miss there, and thus United were up 2–0.

Fortunately, the entertainment value did not decrease in the second half, and just after the change of sides, United were only millimeters away from going up to 3–0.

The home team outplayed Chelsea before Bruno Fernandes was able to finish from a very dangerous position in the box. However, the Portuguese used too much power when he finished, and the ball hit the crossbar and over.

Playroom

United continued to push on, and a few minutes later it was almost a miracle that they didn’t score when they had three great chances on the rap. First it was Martial and Eriksen who got the opportunity, before Casemiro shot straight wide.

Just before the hour had passed, Chelsea also tried, but de Gea first saved a sparkling attempt from Hall, before he also saved a shot from Mudryk.

In the 73rd minute, however, United punctuated the match. Bruno Fernandes was kicked down by Fofana after initially taking a swipe at the Frenchman. The penalty certainly put the Portuguese on target.

Five minutes later it was 4-0 for United, who had a real playhouse at Old Trafford. Fofana made a terrible mistake and played the ball straight to Fernandes. He played free Rashford, who feinted out Fofana, before finishing at Kepa.

The Chelsea goalkeeper saved, but the ball went under the Spaniard, and then Rashford ran up the ball and centered it into the goal.

Just before full-time, Chelsea got a consolation goal when João Félix tapped in just outside the penalty area. It ended 4–1 to Manchester United in the end.
