He called in a “bunch” of musicians and choristers to record a new album of soul and gospel classics, “Only The Strong Survive.” It is the first album with covers since “The Seeger Sessions” (2006). The album will be released on 11 November, and now the single “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)” (without its own cover) is available on streaming services and visually on YouTube.

Focus on the voice

“Letter To You” was a bit too much “plank riding” in my head and was therefore not that exciting. Then it was more interesting to put on soft “Western Stars” (2019), where he brought out the crooner in him. This time, according to his own statement, he has even more focus on his voice.

Soul classics

Frank Wilson’s “Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)”, recorded at Tamla Motown in 1965, in Springsteen’s version is two and a half minutes of life-affirming tones, not very different from the original, but with a larger and updated soundscape, strings, brass , a vocalist who “puts everything on” and a choir that threatens to lift the roof – and reinforces the gospel feeling. Other artists interpreted on the album include Smokey Robinson, William Bell, Sam Moore, Tyrone Davis and The Supremes.

Eager

You’ve never heard Bruce like that before

In a video on YouTube, an enthusiastic Bruce talks about the project. It states that he recorded an album that was scrapped, but that he started over and had an “epiphany” and found a theme that suited him, a soul and gospel album with songs from “the American songbook”.

He also says he rediscovered the strength in his voice. «My voice is badass, I’m 73 years old and I’m kicking ass», he says with a big grin. A video with the whole gang performing the song in front of the audience can also be seen on YouTube.
