Cultural council Reidar Digranes honored Smørå’s school music and Ytrebygda school choir for their impressive 1st and 2nd places in the EC in youth brass bands in Lithuania.

With 96 out of 100 possible points, Smørå’s school music ran away with 1st place in the EC in youth brass bands, in Palanga in Lithuania, on 5 May. With victory in Malmö last year, they are thus the first Norwegian corps to have two EC victories in a row.

If that wasn’t enough, it became double Norwegian in Lithuania thanks to another corps from Bergen. Ytrebygda school corps took 2nd place.

The two corps were honored with a ceremony at the town hall on Monday 13 May. Culture council Reidar Digranes congratulated them on behalf of Bergen municipality. As an appreciation, the corps received a diploma and NOK 10,000 for their further work.

Reigning Norwegian champions

Smørå’s school music wants to be an inclusive arena where cooperation, mastery and trust are important values. The corps members are aged 7 to 19, and come from the areas of Apeltun and Smørås. The main musical responsibility and principal conductor is Magnus Brandseth.

The band are reigning Norwegian champions for school band brass bands, and have the NM title from 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023.

Many good locations

Ytrebygda school band is the district’s own band with musicians aged 8 to 19. Most members come from one of the primary schools in the district: Aurdalslia, Hjellestad, Liland, Skranevatnet or Søreide. The band focuses on the members gaining a richer understanding and experience of music by participating in the band. In addition, they work to build a good environment where younger and older musicians can thrive together.

Ytrebygda school choir has several good positions in the NM in the 1st division for school choir brass band, with 2nd place both in 2018, in 2021, in 2022 and in 2023. The conductor is Thor-Arne Pedersen, who has conducted the main choir since 2011.

Both bands are ready for the National Championships in June, 17 May and the opening of the Bergen Games.
