– It is quite a significant amount. You get a few meters of asphalt for this, says transport minister Jon-Ivar Nygård (Ap) to NTB.

He says that the money will go towards upgrading the national roads and reducing the maintenance backlog.

– This allows us to lay new asphalt, drain and simply maintain our road infrastructure, he says.

The money will also go towards fixing damage after the extreme weather Hans, which ravaged Norway last autumn, and after the extreme weather in northern Norway in 2024.

Reprioritizes

The extra money will come in the revised national budget, which the government will present on Tuesday.

Nygård says that there is talk of re-prioritization within the transport budget that has already been adopted. Among other things, money has been released due to delays in other projects.

He denies that they are cutting anything else to achieve this.

– We are not taking anything away. This is money that has already been allocated this year, but will not be used until later years. Then we will have a chance to strengthen maintenance, and that is good, says the transport minister.

Gjelsvik: – Secures jobs

Chairman of the transport and communications committee at the Storting, Sigbjørn Gjelsvik (Sp), says that there is a great need for maintenance on national roads.

– With this strengthening of maintenance, we take better care of what we have, and we improve accessibility and traffic safety throughout Norway, he says.

He says that Norway is now receiving more maintenance than planned.

– And we secure more assignments for local contractors, who in turn secure local jobs and value creation, says the Center Party politician.

New twist

With the extra money, the overall total allocation for operation and maintenance of national roads will be NOK 10.4 billion this year.

Earlier this year, the government released a new national transport plan (NTP) for the period 2025 to 2036. One of the main priorities is to equip and maintain the road network that already exists.

– The money we are bringing in now is completely in line with the twist in NTP. There, we also give a very high priority to taking care of our roads, he says.

There, NOK 574 billion has been set aside for the national roads in the new transport plan for the period 2025 and 2036. NOK 235 billion will go to operation, maintenance, renewal and minor investments.

In addition, NOK 65 billion will be spent on upgrading county roads, including with avalanche protection.
