The helicopter, of the type Sikorsky S-92, was out to carry out so-called SAR training when it crashed into the sea west of Sotra. Six people were on board, and one of them died.

– The accident happened when the crew was in the process of positioning the helicopter to take up the buoy. It was dark with few external visual references, writes the Accident Investigation Board in an update.

When things went wrong, it all happened within just a few seconds, writes the commission.

– When the flight crew became aware of the abnormal position, they tried to correct it, but the helicopter hit the sea and sank at a depth of 220 metres.

The Accident Investigation Board is still working to establish the reason why the helicopter’s nose rose beyond what was expected.

The flotation elements on the helicopter never deployed despite being armed. These are designed to function during a controlled emergency landing on water, writes Stavanger Aftenblad.

A new international set of regulations, which includes, among other things, the flight elements for helicopters, has been published, it is stated in the update.

This means that the S-92 helicopter type will have to undergo adaptations to satisfy the new regulations. The deadline for this is August 2025.
