Five years before the centenary, Oslo Nye Teater must cut 10 new positions and find a financing solution to survive.

– The most acute problem is that Oslo Nye Teater does not have sufficient liquidity to maintain operations over the summer, says managing director Jan Beckmann in a statement.

A financing solution must be put in place soon to save the theatre, 90 employees and the assignments of 300 annual freelancers, the press release further states.

According to Beckmann, the increase in wage and price growth has for many years exceeded the increase in the operating subsidy from Oslo municipality. The theater has long been able to counteract this with increased own income and savings measures.

The theatre, which has around 150,000 visitors a year to four stages, has reduced staff from 130 full-time employees in 2003 to 100 in 2023. But during 2024–25 a further 10 full-time employees will have to go.

Aftereffects of the pandemic with lower ticket revenues, as well as what the director describes as “historically high pension costs”, led to a significant deficit, lost equity and liquidity deficit last year. Beckmann says there is a “good and ongoing dialogue” with the owner, which is the municipality of Oslo, about solutions.

– This is expected to take time, but the future of the theater is entirely dependent on this being in place as soon as possible, says the Oslo Nye Teater director.
