– The Norwegian Food Safety Authority believes that the sale of the products contravenes Norwegian regulations, says Are Sletta, head of section in the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s chemical food safety section, to VG.
The popular energy drinks Prime Hydration and Prime Energy have a number of different substances added to them.
According to the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, several of the products have a significantly higher content than is permitted under current rules in Norway.
– Health risk
– This could entail a health risk for consumers, emphasizes Sletta.
He points out, among other things, that some of the products from Prime have a high content of vitamin A, which most people get in sufficient quantities from other foods.
– Excessive intake of vitamin A over a long period of time can cause liver damage and other health risks, says Sletta.
He also refers to the caffeine content in the drinks.
– For children and young people, even a low intake of caffeine can cause temporary behavioral changes such as restlessness, irritability, nervousness, anxiety and sleep problems, he explains.
May be banned
If the Norwegian Food Safety Authority discovers the sale of food and beverages that contravenes the regulations, they will normally first contact the business and advise them that they are not allowed to sell the product.
– If they do not comply with this, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority can make a decision with a ban on selling the product, says Sletta.
The sports drink, which the Food Safety Authority now violates Norwegian law, was launched in 2023. The product is the result of a collaboration between YouTubers KSI (29) and Logan Paul (27).
In February, VG wrote about how the bottles of the drink were pulled from the shelves.
In May, the Danish The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration The Danish Veterinary and Food AdministrationLeads control and supervision of foodstuffs in Denmark. a campaign to get the drink, which is not approved in the country, off the shelves.
Similar to the concerns the Norwegian Food Safety Authority is now expressing, the Danish authorities were particularly concerned about the drinks’ high content of vitamins A, as well as the high caffeine content.
