Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine’s Western partners have set one condition for Kiev to continue receiving military aid – not to attack Russia. Cameron, a former British prime minister who returned to frontline politics late last year, was speaking on his second trip to Kiev since taking up the job.
It comes a week after Britain announced its largest ever military aid package to Ukraine. In a further show of support, Cameron pledged £3bn of annual military aid to Ukraine “for as long as it takes”.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on this as follows: “This is the first time a Western politician has so honestly acknowledged what has long been a well-known secret for a majority of the world’s countries: That the West is waging a covert war against Russia with the hands of Ukrainians.” . “Russia will respond if Ukraine launched attacks against Russian territory with British weapons,” she added.
“How irresponsible and uncomprehending you must be not to realize what such statements lead to, especially with regard to countries with nuclear weapons,” Zakharova said in a briefing.
A British attack on Russia could lead to a Russian attack on Britain or British bases
Russia has every reason to regard this as Britain not only approving but encouraging Ukraine to use British weapons against Russian territory. When it comes to advanced western weapons, they always come with trained western personnel. Such attacks must therefore be perceived in Moscow as attacks directed from London. That makes British territory a legitimate target for Russian retaliation.
