– Has anyone seen my two sons. They have not contacted us, Australian Debra Robinson wrote on a Facebook page for tourists to the Mexican peninsula of Baja California.
It was Wednesday 1 May. Two days later, a burned-out car was discovered on a farm. 65 kilometers away, three bodies were found.
On Saturday, the public prosecutor in the Mexican state reports that there is a high probability that the three bodies found on Friday are the brothers Callum (33) and Jake (30) Robinson, and their friend Jack Carter Rhoad (33).
They were probably killed after resisting when someone wanted to steal their car.
The Mexican state is popular among surfers. It is also the state with the most car thefts.
Doctor and lacrosse player
The brothers Jake and Callum Robinson were from Perth in Australia. Jake was a doctor, while Callum played on the Australian national lacrosse team.
Together with his friend, American Jack Carter Rhoad, they had traveled to the peninsula on the west coast of Mexico. The plan was to surf and camp. The previous week they had been to the Coachella music festival in California.
They were reported missing on Monday 29 April. Then their mother hadn’t heard from them for two days. A search was launched and after a day a discovery was made near La Cobana beach.
15 meters deep
The bodies were found in a water hole that is off the beaten track and is difficult to access. The water hole is 15 meters deep, and the rescue team had to use climbing equipment to bring the bodies to safety.
The police’s theory is that the three were killed after a man tried to take their car. When they resisted, they were shot, dumped – and the car burnt. The man whom the Mexican police believe is the culprit has been arrested.
In the same waterhole, the remains of a fourth person were also found. This person has not been identified.
Lost time
Now the family of Callum and Jake are on their way from Australia to Mexico to get as close as possible to where their boys were last, reports CNN.
The public prosecutor added that although the case was investigated, the police had lost important time.
“Unfortunately, they were not reported missing until a few days ago,” said state attorney María Elena Andrade Ramírez, according to the New York Times.
