The increase in food prices is the second month in a row, and comes after several months of falling prices. Food prices increased by 0.3 per cent in April.

This is reported by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Food prices are nevertheless 7.4 per cent lower than they were at the same time last year.

The biggest price increase globally is for meat, where prices in April increased by 1.6 per cent. Meat prices are thus at almost the same level as they were at the same time last year.

– In April, poultry meat prices rose, particularly due to steady imports from countries in the Middle East, where there are still major challenges in production as a result of outbreaks of bird flu, says the report from FAO.

Cattle prices also increased due to high demand in the countries that import a lot. The prices of sheep and pork, on the other hand, fell somewhat.

– Something that reflects weak internal demand in Western Europe and persistently weak demand from leading importers, especially China, writes FAO about the situation for pork.

Grain prices globally have stabilized after a good period of decline. Prices for grain also rose by 0.3 per cent last year. The reason for the price rise is a growing fear of unfavorable conditions for grain production in 2024.

The price of dairy products has also risen so far this year, but in April it leveled off, and the prices of yoghurt and cheese fell by 0.3 per cent globally. Prices are nevertheless 4.2 lower than in the same month last year.

The price of vegetable oils fell somewhat, while the biggest price drop came for sugar. The sugar price fell by 4.4 per cent in April. This is mainly due to larger crops than first thought in Thailand and India.
