The ESRB, the organization behind the age rating of games, recently learned that it has age-rated a previously unknown game called Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. Age ratings often follow rumors and leaks, but this is the first time the title has reached the public, and we therefore know no more than what the ESRB writes on its website.

The summary of the classification reads “This is a collection of 2D challenges and platformers where players traverse through different modes (eg speedrun, survival). Several of the challenges are about reaching certain points, while others are about defeating small enemies or surviving short battles . Some games show pixelated characters using small swords or arrows to hit enemies; the enemies are usually stunned or disappear in a flash.”

The description is reminiscent of the specially made cartridge used in the American Nintendo World Championships in 1990, which contained mini-games based on Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and Tetris, among others, but also the NES Remix for Wii U and 3DS from 2013, which had challenges and contests based on a variety of NES games.

An official announcement is probably not too far off, and it’s possible it will be one of Nintendo’s yet-to-be-revealed titles for 2024. Keep your eyes and ears open.
