On Monday, the verdict was handed down in the Oslo district court. The man (24) who shot two people in the open street near the National Theater in central Oslo was sentenced to eleven years in prison for attempted murder.

– It is in accordance with the prosecution’s reasoning and claim. We consider that the sentencing is correct, says state attorney Irlin Irgens to Dagbladet.

Dagbladet has not yet got hold of Usama Ahmad, who defended the 24-year-old, but in court he disagreed with the state attorney’s claim.

Shot on open street

– The sentence will be five years and ten months, Ahmad said during his closing proceedings.

His client pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and claimed he shot to injure.

The other convict, a 21-year-old man, received five years for complicity in attempted murder.

Ole Petter Drevland defended the man.

– Based on the conclusion of the judgment, I believe that the client should appeal, says Drevland, and makes a reservation in that he has not yet had time to read the entire judgment.

PLIVO message

On the night of 15 January 2023, the police received a report of ongoing shooting in Klingenberggata in central Oslo.

The police interpreted the reports as ongoing life-threatening violence (PLIVO), and mobilized extensive resources.

When they arrived at the scene, two people were still lying in the street. One shot in the leg, the other life-threateningly injured after the bullet severed a main artery.

The incident was filmed by a surveillance camera and in court great importance was attached to the evidence.

Dagbladet has gained access to the surveillance video, which shows the sequence of events.

Not believed

The 24-year-old pulls a gun, then runs across the street after shooting and wounding the first victim.

He runs towards the other victim, who holds the 21-year-old co-accused against the wall. As the man sees the gun, he tries to pull away.

– I use the 21-year-old as a shield. He hit the last shot, he said in court.

Finally, he falls over and is left lying on the street.

The shooter walks over and lunges at him with the gun.

– I tried to fire another shot, but it didn’t work, explained the defendant, who also said that the gun had tickled several times during the incident.

The court: No control

The verdict states that the 24-year-old had no control over the situation.

“The last time the defendant pulled away, he stood directly above the victim and aimed the gun at his lower body, lower back or seat. If the weapon had not clicked on this occasion, the court believes that XX (victim, journalist note) could have been killed”.

The 24-year-old’s claim that he only shot to injure was therefore not believed by the court.

Both the two defendants were also convicted of aggravated robbery of a nitrous oxide seller.

The judgment is not final.
