The entire Eurovision circus has been shaken by the case, which has characterized newspaper columns around the world in recent days.
Dutch participant Joost Klein (26) was banned from the competition on Saturday, due to an incident with an employee in the TV production on Thursday.
At the same time, Swedish police confirmed to Dagbladet that the incident is being investigated by the police as a threat. There are many rumors about what actually happened, but the Dutch broadcaster Avotros denies that any physical confrontation took place.
NRK’s presenter Marte Stokstad nevertheless stated the following live early in the Eurovision broadcast on Saturday evening. :
– One of the favourites, Joost Klein with “Europapa” will not be allowed on stage tonight after a violent incident that happened after the press conference on Thursday, so there will only be 25 finalists this year. A slightly shorter broadcast then, someone can take comfort in that.
The word “violent incident” is not entirely precise in this case.
– There has been a mistake here. We had written “alleged incident of violence” in the script. Unfortunately, the word “allegedly” was missed when this was read live. It can happen on live broadcasts like this, especially this year when there was an extreme amount of uncertainty about the broadcast in advance, says Stig Karlsen, delegation leader for Norway in Eurovision according to an email from NRK’s communications officer.
He adds that Marte Stokstad has done a fantastic job of guiding the Norwegian people through these broadcasts.
This is what the Dutch broadcaster writes about the mentioned episode with Klein in a statement:
– Contrary to clear agreements, Joost was filmed immediately after he came off the stage. At the time, he repeatedly asked not to be filmed. This was not respected. This led to a threatening movement towards the camera. Joost did not touch the camerawoman.
