Arla, Milk price | Swedish farmers reach their highest milk price in over a year

--

It is the first time since March 2023 that Arla’s milk price has risen to over five Swedish kroner.

The Nation wrote earlier this spring about Swedish dairy farmers, who have had lower milk prices than many of their European professional colleagues.

The milk price has partly looked lower because of the weak krona, which we have had in both Norway and Sweden. After the war in Ukraine broke out, and we experienced a violent price increase for most input factors, the price of milk at Arla was raised quickly.

In the first half of 2023, the milk price plunged, but since last summer it has risen again. Now Arla is raising the milk price again by five øre per litre. For organic milk, the price the farmer receives is NOK 5.70.

The managing director of Arla Sweden is happy that the company can increase the price to the farmer, and believes that all parts of the value chain must contribute to create more sustainable food production.

– Value chains for food, politicians and consumers must all help to finance the production of climate- and environmentally smart food. The farmers cannot foot the whole bill, says Cecilia Kocken.

Arla writes that there are three main reasons why the milk price can be increased now:

  • The global milk volumes continue to be somewhat low (Both the EU and the USA are somewhat lower than at the same time last year)
  • Positive development in the grocery trade
  • Stable industrial market
